@EileenChollet Interesting. I’ve had a tremendously difficult time getting human beings in the federal government explain classification procedures to me or delineate what constitutes “national defense information” for instance — is there a good one-stop shopping source on these things?

@mtaibbi Federal data policy expert here. They can’t classify info solely for those reasons, but if releasing that info would also damage national security, they can. That said, the classification system is such a dumpster fire in practice that it’s unlikely there’s a “they” at all.

Happy for input from lawyers, but my understanding is that you can’t classify “violations of law” or information causing “embarrassment” to the state.

The statement 'Much appreciated thank you!' does not constitute public discourse. It is a polite acknowledgment and expression of gratitude in a conversational context, rather than a substantive engagement with public issues, debates, or discussions.
