@willsisskind The late Soviets trended toward us - heavy surveillance but little open repression, wide resignation to lack of political choice, pervasive orthodox thinking, dualistic class structure ("affluent" party minority vs. the rest), samizdat lit/media/arts, snowballing bureaucratism..

@mtaibbi 5) These rigid cultural orthodoxies exist but again the US allows for more freedom of speech and expression (for better or worse) and there are folks trying to limit that in order to bring us CLOSER to a Soviet-type nation culturally, which would suck. SO (next)

1) Yeah, old people are in positions of power, but there are also young people too
2) A lot of people are running the country
3) Media may be a hellscape but at least it allows for different points of view
