I took the HQ of XPRIZE to the only place it made sense: St. Louis, Missouri, and created the new Spirit of St. Louis organization, where we raised 500K by pitching our hearts out to the many multi-billionaire industrial families.

I created XPRIZE as a 501(c)(3), and without knowing who would fund it at first, I started asking for donations of $25 and $100 that were sent by mail (back when we had and cared about mailboxes) and slowly started funding my goal.
