@GaryMarcus @CycorpAI I don’t think that things start with hype. The DARPA Grand Challenge for self-driving gave a clear breakthrough result. People just failed to understand that it would be so hard to extend it to more general human-centered contexts. Hype certainly exists, but it comes later.

Big investments happen due to: ① clear breakthrough results (AlexNet), ② crisis (atom bomb), ③ politics (@CycorpAI).

Otherwise small studies bubble along; that was all of probabilistic AI, neural nets, diffusion models & mRNA vaccines. Neurosymbolic AI so far fails all three.

B. Spend another $5-50 B on LLMs before eventually realizing the value of choice A.

Note: $100B on current approaches couldn’t even build a robust L5 driverless car
