@jeblad @GaryMarcus The point is that, regardless of the cause, the promise eventually catches up with the hype. In fact, the time interval between hype - reality cycle is also reduced due to technological acceleration.

The more likely cause of the AI winters is too much hype that hasn't paid off, and people get disillusioned. Some of the people behind AI today promise way too much, and it may backfire.

@DeryaTR_ @GaryMarcus There have been several AI winters of various causes. Perceptrons at their core are binary linear classifiers and can't solve several simple problems. There are several ways to fix that, and some solutions were known pretty early on. Some of the problems are still unsolved.

@GaryMarcus Well, past success doesn't guarantee future one. Reminds me of the AI winter that followed after Minsky killed perceptrons. Decades later, they laid the foundation for neural networks, leading to current foundation models. You might be greatly underestimating the rate of progress

none of LeCun’s posts telling me about the limitations of LLMs aged well, for example. instead he know echoes the ones he said were “rear-guard”
