@GaryMarcus Oh I get it. You define the learned representations to be symbols. I, otoh, see them as percepts to which symbols can be attached later to form a language.

Neurosymbolic AI makes sense in this light but creating generalize percepts on the fly is the mountain to climb imo.

@TrueAIHound bees likely have symbols (in the sense of representations of equivalence classes that get used in downstream computation); see my discussion of both bees and symbols in The Algebraic Mind.

@GaryMarcus I may be misinterpreting what you mean by symbols. Symbols imply language in my mind but bees can generalize without language. The brain receives spikes that are meaningful but it has no idea what they mean since they all look alike. Meaning is learned from their relative timing.

@GaryMarcus I have my doubts about Neurosymbolic AI but your list amounts to saying that AGI can't be solved without solving intelligence.

We need a revolutionary solution for perceptual generalization (compositionality) before symbols can even enter the picture.

If someone can build trustworthy AI without all four of these I will publicly acknowledge that I got something deeply wrong.
