@MichaelOHogan1 @BruceOlsen @GaryMarcus Ng and many of the others are johnnies-come-lately in my opinion. All the ideas behind deep neural nets (deep learning) preceded them.

I was under the impression that he led the "breakthru", and is the "father of AI" ?

@MichaelOHogan1 @BruceOlsen @GaryMarcus There was no breakthrough. Deep neural nets were invented in the 80s and 90s. What made them commercially viable was the advent of very fast computer processors (GPUs) and the availability of lots of data on the internet in the early 2000s.

@TrueAIHound @BruceOlsen @GaryMarcus Heard about a "breakthru" in NNs a while back that gave the tech new life ..
As I investigate now .. it seems as if this "breakthru" was simply adding xtra (deep) layers in the NNs .. & perhaps experimentation w/ variations of activation functions.
Is this true?

@MichaelOHogan1 @BruceOlsen @GaryMarcus Well, Gary Marcus has been sounding the alarm about the inadequacies of neural nets for decades but his warnings have fallen on deaf ears. A lot of people began making a lot of money with them and no one was willing to listen to him. Things are only slightly better today.

it's a miracle to me that it does much of anything of use.
it seems like they started producing results, so everyone just "went with it" .. having no idea whether or not it was a dead end.
