@lilbytelil @ylecun sure i have always supported deep learning eg llms as “one tool among many”, to quote my 2018 Deep Learning: A Critical Appraisal. And that’s a fair criticism of his specific formulation.

@GaryMarcus What do you think about LLMs being an important component in a larger, more modular system, similar to our brains?

If that were the case, then it is indeed progress and not solely an off ramp, as @ylecun suggests. But then we are more like ~10% of the way there and not >50%.

It’s a strong result, but tbh I would not assume that bigger LLMs are the critical path to AGI.
