@CharlesTTHF @GaryMarcus Hence 'at least not of the same magnitude'. It's also not of particular significance what OpenAI does or does not do or say. Many other participants. Public policy issues are how to deal with entities that use the products. eg Gen AI bots are a Twitter issue, not OpenAI.

@t0nyyates @GaryMarcus Even if OpenAI is not on a path to AGI, the development of Generative AI - more advanced forms, modifiable by bad actors - is surely a big public policy issue? Machine learning algorithms have helped make social media a disruptive & dangerous force; Gen AI could multiply this.

@GaryMarcus 2. If that is true, although it's disconcerting that OpenAI are being opaque and duplicitous about safety, it's not a public policy issue, at least not of the same magnitude. And more to do with corporate governance.

@GaryMarcus 1. It seems highly likely to me that OpenAI is not on a route to generating a dangerous AGI. In which case Altman and his company don't pose the danger to the rest of us that they might. Gary often expresses the first view. The second follows from this IMO.
