@Isa_CamPaiva @GaryMarcus @McclaneDet Chiang badly missed an opportunity to refer to this important example of an artist using early forms of AI, and the show was just at the Whitney Museum!
I’m surprised the New Yorker allowed the piece to be published in its current form- it’s just naive.

@joshuadecter @GaryMarcus @McclaneDet The processes you are describing are still not thoughtless, no? Hence the name conceptual art. Do you truly believe that all the output of such models is art? And if not, where do you draw the line?

@Isa_CamPaiva @GaryMarcus @McclaneDet If an artist chooses to give over their decision-making to AI, or any other apparatus, that too is an artistic decision, which Chiang seems to not understand. Does Chiang know the long and complex histories of conceptual art practices, for example? Unlikely, based on his article.

@Isa_CamPaiva @GaryMarcus @McclaneDet Miller is a filmmaker who is being repositioned as an ‘artist’ by Gagosian. Fine, whatever, it’s a cool marketing strategy, but Miller has no real connection to contemporary art and its’ histories & discourses.
On the other hand, art can be anything that the artist defines it as.

@joshuadecter @GaryMarcus @McclaneDet His definition is actually very broad and even encompasses digital art made purely with GenAI (e.g. Bennet Miller's images). He defines art by its process - it's in the series of choices made - so a quick and thoughtless process where choices are left up to a model is not art.

@Isa_CamPaiva @GaryMarcus @McclaneDet The problem with Chiang’s essay is that he is not up to date on how visual artists have been using AI has a tool (nor does he know the history of digital art), and, he defaults to a rather retrograde definition of what human art is, as if AI art should conform to those criteria.

The statement constitutes public discourse as it engages in a substantive discussion about the use of AI in art, referencing specific examples and critiques. The tone is respectful and aims to clarify a misunderstanding in the ongoing debate.
