@Rationaliber @GaryMarcus @tylercowen Except that doesn't actually happen because people aren't stupid enough to buy homes if they can't pay the taxes.

Rich people having to sell some of their assets if they go up in value is not a tragedy and is not problematic.

@tylercowen I am not an economist; I am a democrat I think unrealized cap gains even on the vastly wealthy is problematic.

But the main issue is character. A problematic tax proposal isn’t going to make vote for an anti-democratic insurrectionist felon.

Economic substance is the main issue. But if you do want to consider the politics, every time a moderate Democrat toys with taxing unrealized capital gains, wealthy and influential people are scared away from Harris. I just don't see why Democratic economists should be wanting to…
