All eight men killed that day were killed while acting in the service of their fellow soldiers -- defending them, resupplying them, trying to rescue them. As is written in the book of John: "There is no greater love than this—that a man should lay down his life for his friends."

Staff SGTs Clint Romesha and Ty Carter would in 2013 be awarded the Medal of Honor for their brave and valorous actions that day, the 1st time since Vietnam that two living soldiers were so honored for the same battle.

Gallegos had been trying to help severely wounded SPC Stephan Mace.

The two surviving men in the truck - SGT Brad Larson and SPC Ty Carter - ultimately got Mace to safety, risking their lives in the process. But Mace had lost too much blood and didn't make it.

Staff Sgt. Justin Gallegos would later receive the nation's second highest honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, for his actions that day. Sadly, posthumously.

The incoming fire was too intense; their radio broken. The five soldiers stuck in the truck decided to make a mad dash for safety.

SGT Vernon Martin was killed before he could make it to safety.

Another one of those 3 was SGT Christopher Griffin. He also didn't survive the mission.
