My goal was to make people reimagine the idea of space flight and challenge the status quo of the assumption that only governments could do it. Back in the 90s, commercial and human space flights were viewed as insane.

I created XPRIZE as a 501(c)(3), and without knowing who would fund it at first, I started asking for donations of $25 and $100 that were sent by mail (back when we had and cared about mailboxes) and slowly started funding my goal.
