The absolute last thing either party wants is for emotions like anger/fear to be directed at banks, oil, weapons manufacturers, media conglomerates etc.

Dems mute emotions & treat them as childish while Repubs redirect them towards the powerless (immigrants, minorities, poor).

3. Gives the illusion the elected rep has thought very deeply about the climate crisis.
I’ve spoken to many of these people. They are NOT thinking deeply about the climate crisis.
They are thinking about keeping donors happy & winning elections.

It does a few things important to elected reps who are owned by big oil & banks.

1. Mutes the sheer scale and horror of climate breakdown.
2. Keeps the professional class feeling superior to the working class even though the professional class drives most climate delay.

Can you imagine if every time an elected official said “existential threat” instead they said “climate change will destroy your home, access to food, water, & kill millions maybe even billions of ppl.”
