It is a violation of journalistic ethics to coordinate media coverage. The Stanford authors anticipated this and created talking points to respond to various concerns, e.g., "We can't/won't/don't collaborate with other news organizations on breaking news."

@SenRonJohnson @ChuckGrassley Why would Benavides & FBI give an unnecessary briefing? Probably so they could then leak information about the briefing to The Washington Post.

Keep in mind this was 2.5 months before NY Post story.

This appears to be a key part of the FBI's disinformation operation.
