@RepresenterTh link? i know a different paper then trained specifically for chess, without MCTS, but it couldn’t eg transfer what it learned to a bigger board etc; was a very narrow solution in many ways.

@GaryMarcus In early 2024 deepmind released a paper about a transformer model (neural net) that could achieve master level at chess. They had clever tricks to avoid illegal moves. Also used mcts for search.

Has anyone found an LLM that can reliably play chess, without making illegal moves?
