@GaryMarcus That's a much more interesting claim, and the one I think you should be making.
"Not making profit" is just not much of a claim about the overall viability of a business model. Like, Amazon technically didn't make a profit in their first decade, or something like that.

@robertskmiles my understanding is that the LLM companies all have relatively little runway and heavy competition and need to raise constantly to cover operating costs so are more in scenario 1 than 2.

@GaryMarcus I don't know what kind of thing you're responding to, but I would want to make clear the difference between
1) Company can't get enough revenue to cover operating costs
and
2) Company is getting huge amounts of revenue, much more than operating costs, but is investing even more

God I thought I had seen it all. Now I am being painted as the antichrist for saying that OpenAI hasn’t made a profit.

Like somehow I invented the idea that profits are what you have left over from revenue after your expenses.

Jeezus.
