@GaryMarcus @peterevoss Since we already have general intelligence and know its limits very well, I am unsure what marginal value an artificial one will in reality have.

Plus the cost (cash/energy/lost opportunities) is mounting. How many problems could we solve with $7 Trillion & specialist systems?

@binocularity but then lots of things fall between stools, and (in the extreme) only specific domain-engineered problems have trustworthy solutions. i think you are underestimating the potential value of general intelligence if we could actually build it. cc @peterevoss

Computers have been "smarter" than people for years at all sorts of tasks, sorting, spelling, translating, searching, arithmetic....

The idea it is efficient to make one bug-ridden general intelligence is flawed thinking. Much cheaper and better to make many specialised systems.

what exactly does “smarter than any one human” mean? an AI that is smarter than the dumbest human we can find? or able to beat any single human on some random task? better than a human that doesn’t have access to the internet?
