@GaryMarcus Well, current neural nets do have to pre-declare their entire structure, at least on the level of embedding layers vs convolution layers vs transformer blocks, before you start training weights. And that does bake some prior assumptions about each layer's function into the model

Awesome new work on the wiring diagram of the fly.

One key tidbit relevant to AI: the fly brain has at least 8,453 cell types – representing vastly parts-level complexity than we find in current AI models (where there is essentially only one kind of “neuron”).

Here it is! A huge milestone in neuroscience – the complete connectome of the fly brain from the FlyWire team (@FlyWireNews). In this special issue, we have 9 research articles. I’ll try to summarize them in a couple threads starting here 🧵
