Not until the second Trump administration - with a new breed of techno-fascists, white supremacists, and Christian nationalists - has an American government proactively empowered forces that unabashedly undermine that ideal. 3/4

We have never fully actualized that ideal, but until the Trump administration there was at least the social consensus that we should try. Many struggled and died to make it so. 2/4
