With 102 days until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris received a big endorsement from former President Obama and former first lady Michelle. Former President Trump’s vice-presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, is facing criticism over past comments on childless Americans.

Vance's selection underscores on some level the prominence of the new powers that be in GOP who don't have elected office but have enormous voices at live events, podcasts, Mar-a-Lago, etc. Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump Jr., and likeminded conservatives.

Ultimately the decision was former President Trump's and his alone. Sen. Vance ultimately seen as a generational contrast but ideological ally who could focus on the ind. Midwest. But interesting how Burgum came from seemingly nowhere to come pretty close, but not close enough.

Plus, the North Dakota law on abortion (see link below) became an issue attached by GOP rivals/Burgum skeptics to the gov's possible selection, knowing that Trump is on edge about putting that issue front and center in some campaign battlegrounds. https://apnews.com/article/north…

But that same lack of allies/advisers on nat'l level made him somewhat ill-equipped to navigate the turbulent waters of Trump's orbit, where political capital, celebrity, family, and others can tilt discussions and one's standing... Burgum remained liked, but not always THE one.

What's interesting about the VP pick is that going back to the debates last year, Trump expressed admiration for Burgum. Told friends "central casting," "nice guy," "really successful," etc. And some Trump allies liked that he didn't have a huge team of aides and donors...
